INTRODUCTION
Located in South Hamilton, MA., Myopia Polo is one of the oldest clubs
in the country and one of the largest in the Northeast. The club has 5
polo fields, including 3 tournament fields. The program is run by a
professional manager, includes a full-time licensed instructor and is
fully accredited by the USPA. The season traditionally begins Memorial
Day weekend in May and runs through the middle of October. Over 50
players, ranging from first year novice to 6 goal professionals
participate yearly. Myopia Polo welcomes all players to join in our
introductory Coaching League, our regular Club Program or our exciting
Tournaments, as described below.
THE COACHING LEAGUE
Myopia's introductory program is the Coaching League. Currently run by 2
goal professional, Estani Puch, the coaching league offers polo 3 days a
week on the Myopia outdoor fields. If players do not have their own
horses, they are available to rent by the chukker or to lease, with
stabling, grooming and transportation provided. Instruction is provided
during the chukkers by Estani and some of the professional players who
often drop in to help Private lessons are also available. Although
mostly playing with other coaching league members, opportunities exist
for playing with the other Myopia members in regular practices, the
traditional Sunday afternoon Captain's games and the Cub's low goal
tournaments.
A competent level of riding experience is required as often
this
is the first experience for new players on large outdoor fields
transitioning from either other equestrian disciplines or arena polo.
CLUB POLO
The main or regular polo program at Myopia provides members with polo in
Club practices, Sunday afternoon Captain's games on historic Gibney
field and Club sponsored tournaments. Players can either participate as
full Season members with priority in the Sunday Captain games and pay
the lower member fees in tournaments or as Associate members with full
playing privileges but lower priority in Captain's games and paying
non-member tournament fees. All members are welcome to participate in
player and umpire clinics, the enjoyable after the game gatherings, our
spring and fall meetings and the Polo Ball in the Myopia Hunt Club.
Membership is by invitation and open to all players demonstrating the
ability to safely and competently play at a more advanced level.
TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW
Myopia Polo hosts 4 USPA tournaments during our tournament season in
July and August. The Harrison Cup begins in early July and is played at
the 6 to 8 goal level. Next is Myopia's USPA National Tournament, the
Chairman's Cup, played at the 8 -12 goals. In early August the 6 goal
Forbes Cup is played, followed by the 6 goal Governor's Cup. The
tournaments traditionally have 4 to 6 teams participating, 2 USPA
professional umpires and players and teams from both Myopia and from
other clubs. Myopia also hosts a 2 Goal intraclub tournament in late
June and two 4 goal tournaments in July and August open to all Myopia
and other players.
ARENA POLO
Polo is also played in the Joseph Poor outdoor arena located at the
Myopia Schooling Field. The fully lighted arena hosts polo in the spring
and fall for Myopia polo members and the affiliated Crimson
Interscholastic and Harvard Intercollegiate Polo Clubs.
