On July 30th Will Tankard, 31, died in a truck and trailer accident in Ohio while on his way to Hamilton from Kentucky. The entire polo community is in deep morning for this tremendous loss. Will has graced the fields of Myopia for over 7 years, playing mainly on the Black Oak team, and was without a doubt the best rider and one of the top players we had.
Will was a genuine, caring, easy going, witty, hard working, talented, passionate and driven individual. He was a true gentleman on and off the field.
Our club will not be the same without him. Will left this earth with his loyal companion Chewy and 3 of his loved polo ponies Teacup, Merlin and Red.
As we all mourn the horribly tragic and sudden loss of our dear friend we are taking steps at Myopia to help Will's long-time partner Samira Waernlund, and his mother, Cissie to take care of Will's surviving horses and deal with the sad aftermath of the accident.
Myopia polo hosted the Will Tankard Memorial Tournament on Sunday, August 2nd with Team USPA playing South America. This game showcased many of Will's friends competing at a high level of polo that Will loved to play. All of the proceeds from the gate as well as donations collected from spectators and sponsors went directly to help with the care of Will's horses. An online option has also been set up at facebook.com/rememberwill. Donations made to the USPA through the AIPF are tax deductible.
